The government is looking to introduce a separate body of Housing Regulatory Authority soon that will look into the disputes arising out of co-operative housing societies and its members. Presently, the government has formed a team, in collaboration with Co-operative, Marketing and Textile department, to study and work towards inclusion of a separate chapter for the co-operative housing societies in the Maharashtra co-operative Societies Act 1960. The newly formed authority is expected to fall in the lines of Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority or more commonly called MahaRERA.
The main initiator of the step is the ever-increasing urbanization and number of housing societies going up every year. Another reason is the housing societies act in a slightly different way than that of the other co-operatives. As per DNA, this step has been taken “to make functioning and administration of co-operative housing societies simple, distinct and consummative.” The team consists of members like Sandeep Deshmukh (SRA), Ramesh Prabhu (Chairman of Maharashtra Societies Welfare Association), Chhaya Ajgaonkar (of Housing Federation), and other eminent members working in this field.
“Currently when there’s a dispute between the members and the housing society the complaint is heard either in the co-operative court or the Consumer Forum. The suggestion of the team is that a Regulatory Authority must be formed, which will deal with disputes arising out of a co-operative society and it will be solved there itself,” said Ramesh Prabhu.
